Signs You Need to Rest

If you’ve been feeling tired but keep telling yourself to push through, this is your gentle reminder: rest is not a weakness. It’s not something you earn after you’ve done “enough.” And it’s not a luxury reserved for when life slows down.

Rest is a gift from God — and sometimes, the most faithful thing we can do is pause.

Here are a few signs your body, mind, and spirit may be asking for rest.

1. You’re Constantly Tired — Even After Sleeping

You go to bed early. You get enough hours. And yet… you wake up exhausted.

That’s because sleep and rest are not the same thing.

Rest includes mental, emotional, and spiritual renewal — not just physical sleep. If your mind is always racing, your heart feels heavy, or your soul feels depleted, your body will still feel tired no matter how long you sleep.

This isn’t something to ignore. It’s something to listen to.

2. You’re Irritable, Emotional, or Easily Overwhelmed

Little things feel big. Your patience is short. You may feel on the verge of tears — or completely numb.

This doesn’t mean you’re failing. It means you’re human.

When we don’t rest, we stay in survival mode. Over time, exhaustion steals our joy, our peace, and our ability to respond with grace — to others and to ourselves.

God never intended for us to live in a constant state of overwhelm.

3. You Feel Disconnected From God

Prayer feels forced. Quiet time feels hard. You want to hear God, but everything feels noisy.

Even Jesus stepped away to rest and be alone with the Father.

“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” (Mark 1:35)

Rest creates space — and space allows us to reconnect.

4. You’re Running on Obligation Instead of Peace

You keep saying yes because you feel like you should. You’re doing good things, but you’re doing them exhausted. You’re busy, but you’re not at peace.

God doesn’t ask us to live from pressure or guilt. He leads with peace.

Rest helps us realign with what we’re called to do — and what we’re allowed to release.

5. Your Body Is Speaking (and You’re Ignoring It)

Headaches. Tension. Frequent illness. Burnout.

Your body isn’t betraying you — it’s communicating with you.

We are called to steward our bodies, not override them. Rest is part of that stewardship. Listening is an act of wisdom, not selfishness.

What Rest Can Look Like

Rest doesn’t have to be dramatic or perfectly planned. It can be simple and holy.

Rest might look like:

  • Sitting in silence with God

  • Saying "no" without explaining

  • Putting your phone down

  • Taking a slow walk

  • Observing a small Sabbath rhythm

  • Letting yourself stop — without guilt

You don’t have to earn rest. You’re allowed to receive it.

A Final Encouragement

God is not disappointed in your need for rest. He’s not measuring your worth by your productivity. And He is still working — even when you pause.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

If you’ve been feeling tired in ways sleep can’t fix, consider this your permission to stop, breathe, and rest — trusting that God will meet you there.

XO,

Courtney

Decluttering Isn't Just About Your Home

Getting rid of access stuff in my house started out as simply cleaning the house. We had too much stuff! I constantly felt overwhelmed in our house. Then we moved and could not bring most of our thing
