Decluttering Isn't Just About Your Home

Getting rid of access stuff in my house started out as simply cleaning the house. We had too much stuff! I constantly felt overwhelmed in our house. Then we moved and could not bring most of our things with us. So, we packed up our clothes, some kids' toys, and other necessities and I was still overwhelmed in the stuff! That's when I realized decluttering was my only option. In order for me to feel at peace in our home, I needed to get rid of the chaos.

I started in my own closet. Although I really wanted to start in the toy room, I figured that if I was going to declutter a space without telling my family, I should start with my own closet. I was real and honest with myself about what I liked to have versus what I actually wear every day. And the rest was donated. At first, my closet seemed empty… But then I did laundry. And magically it filled up again. That tells me I had too many clothes to begin with! It was also my first indication that decluttering is a habit, not a weekend project.

My decluttering journey brought me through every room in our house. The kitchen, the linen closet, the dreaded toy room, and yes, even the bathroom. As I decluttered each space, I found myself wanting to sit and admire the clean room when it was all done. It brought me peace!

Decluttering is about more than just your home.

It is your lifestyle.

It is your peace of mind.

It is how you show up in your space.

Thirty years of bad habits are slowly being refined to create the life I want to model for my kids. Nowadays, so many are blaming their bad habits on the people who raised them. It is not my parent's fault that I don't know how to limit the amount of laundry in my house. It is not my grandparent's fault that I have a hard time letting go of nostalgic things. It is my fault however, if I do not learn from the habits of those who came before me.

Everyone is just trying to do their best with the information they have in the time they are given. If decluttering seems like a daunting task, I encourage you to give it a try anyway. Start small. Tackle one drawer a day for a week and see how that changes Your view of your space. Embrace a life of "less" to live the life of "more."

XO,

Courtney
